ON THE OCCASIONAL visit to Maria’s house I brought my Flip Cam, and would pull it out during certain impromptu moments that felt worthy of immortalization—an amusing or moving anecdote she was impelled to share; a trip to the supermarket; hanging out by the pool. Whatever it was. This will mean little to you now, but if I’ve done my job it will mean something when you finish the book. The footage represents the last visual memories I have left of our three years together, and I hold it very near and dear to my heart. But I’m ready to set it free.
